About Phone Number Validation

International phone numbers follow the E.164 standard defined by the ITU-T. A valid E.164 number consists of a country code followed by the subscriber number, with a maximum of 15 digits total.

E.164 Format

+[country code] [subscriber number]

What Gets Checked
  • Presence of a valid country calling code (1–3 digits)
  • Total digit count within E.164 range (minimum 7, maximum 15 digits)
  • Number contains only digits, spaces, dashes, dots, and parentheses
  • Country identification based on calling code prefix

Limitations

This validator checks the format and structure of a phone number. It does NOT verify:

  • Whether the number is currently in service
  • Whether the number can receive calls or SMS
  • The carrier or line type (mobile, landline, VoIP)
  • Local number portability status
Tip: Always store phone numbers in E.164 format (+[country][number]) for consistent international compatibility.
